Tower of Light: A Beacon of Sustainable Design

Introduction to the Tower

The Tower of Light stands tall at 40 meters, serving as a cornerstone for a new low-carbon energy center in the heart of Manchester’s city center. This innovative structure embodies a biomimetic design philosophy, drawing inspiration from nature’s geometries to create a structure of unparalleled strength and efficiency. Developed over a decade-long period of innovation and research, the Tower of Light showcases the Shell Lace Structure, a pioneering concept by Tonkin Liu in collaboration with engineers at Arup.

Engineering Marvel: The Shell Lace Structure

Constructed from 6 and 8mm thick flat steel sheets, the Tower of Light boasts a super-light, super-thin single-surface structure that optimizes material usage while maximizing strength. Utilizing modern construction methods and advanced digital modeling, the Shell Lace Structure represents a breakthrough in architectural engineering. This towering structure marks the largest implementation of the Shell Lace Structure to date, showcasing the potential of innovative design in the built environment.

The Wall of Energy: A Dynamic Façade

Complementing the Tower of Light is the Wall of Energy, a 63-meter long street façade enveloping the new energy center. Adorned with glazed ceramic tiles, this façade reflects the dynamic energy of the surrounding environment, capturing the interplay of light and movement from the sky above and the bustling activity of the city streets. Inspired by nature’s patterns, the tessellated tile design evokes the fluidity of ocean waves, creating a visually striking and technologically advanced façade.

Illuminating Innovations

Both the Tower of Light and the Wall of Energy are designed to minimize energy consumption while maximizing visual impact. During the day, polished reflectors within the tower harness sunlight, filling the interior with natural light. At night, LED lights illuminate the tower and façade, creating captivating light sequences that mark the passage of time. On special occasions, the Tower and Wall come alive with vibrant colors, celebrating cultural milestones and events.

Collaboration and Sustainability

The realization of the Tower of Light and Wall of Energy was made possible through collaboration with local fabricators who brought Tonkin Liu’s vision to life. Shawton Engineering and Darwen Terracotta played integral roles in fabricating the tower and ceramic tiles, respectively, ensuring precision and quality in every detail. Furthermore, the completion of the Civic Quarter Heat Network (CQHN) and Energy Centre underscores Manchester’s commitment to sustainability, providing low-carbon energy to key civic buildings and contributing to the city’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.
