A Blend of Heritage and Innovation
Situated on the southern slopes of Mont Gale in Bromont, Quebec, the Saltbox Passive House stands as a testament to both traditional architectural forms and cutting-edge sustainable design. Certified as both a Passive House and LEED Platinum, it represents a harmonious fusion of historical vernacular and contemporary environmental consciousness.
Architectural Inspiration
Drawing inspiration from the vernacular architecture of 17th-century rural buildings, the Saltbox Passive House features an “L” shaped plan and a distinctive roof silhouette. This architectural homage to the Saltbox-type structures prevalent in the Eastern Townships countryside pays tribute to the region’s rich heritage while embracing modern sustainability principles.
Sustainable Comfort
Designed for a family of four, the Saltbox Passive House offers exceptional comfort throughout the year, thanks to its high-performance construction and south-facing orientation. Spread across three levels and nestled within a 2.5-acre meadow on the edge of a protected forest area, the 3,100 sq.ft. residence provides a serene and sustainable living environment.
Integration with Nature
The house’s design prioritizes passive solar heating and panoramic views of the surrounding valley. By harmonizing with the natural topography of the site, the tiered construction minimizes visible retaining walls and maintains a discreet presence from the street. The strategic placement of the garage and workshop further enhances the house’s integration with its surroundings.
Energy Efficiency and Innovation
Energy efficiency lies at the core of the Saltbox Passive House’s design. From highly insulated and airtight envelopes to superior heat recovery systems, every aspect of the house is meticulously crafted to minimize energy consumption and maximize comfort. Energy modeling informed key design decisions, leading to the selection of passive triple-glazed windows and environmentally friendly materials such as wood siding and cellulose insulation.
A Sustainable Vision
The Saltbox Passive House serves as a beacon of sustainable architecture, demonstrating that ambitious design and high energy standards can be achieved within a reasonable budget. Beyond its architectural elegance, it stands as a testament to the potential of marrying tradition with innovation in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
