Transforming Spaces: Polychrome House by YSG.STUDIO

The task at hand was to reimagine a two-storey, two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence into a more spacious three-bedroom home. The client sought to integrate indoor and outdoor retreat spaces while expanding the living area for enhanced functionality.

Concept

Originally crafted in the 1960s by Payne & Hunt Architects, the house retained its vintage charm with exposed brick and rich timber finishes. Embracing the concept of ‘joyful living,’ the design narrative evolved into a vibrant celebration of color, reflecting the owners’ zest for life.

Structural Changes

A transformative approach involved relocating the kitchen to the ground floor, creating space for a third bedroom, loft with a study, and ensuite. Departing from conventional layouts, a custom brick plinth now delineates the kitchen, doubling as an open liquor display. Rearranging the rear facade expanded the lounge area, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor realms with bold crazy paving.

Colour & Materiality

Color emerged as a central theme, balancing subdued tones with daring hues. Warm whites and mushroom pinks form the base palette, accentuated by bold shades that infuse vitality into living spaces. Collaborating with Lymesmith, a local company, a bespoke color palette was curated to complement the exposed brick walls, culminating in a captivating mural behind the fireplace. Terracotta backdrops, mustard yellow joinery, and blue fridge cabinets add vibrant accents, while curved seating invites relaxation.

Integration of Iconic Design

Iconic mid-century furniture pieces harmonize with the home’s original architecture, offering a playful nod to its sixties roots. The result is a welcoming sanctuary that defies conventional design norms, embracing bold colors as a form of self-expression within the Australian landscape.

Conclusion

Polychrome House stands as a testament to the transformative power of design, where every element is meticulously curated to evoke joy and warmth. With its bold use of color, thoughtful spatial planning, and seamless integration of iconic design elements, the residence exemplifies a fearless commitment to vibrant living.
