Revitalizing a Milan Laboratory: Tomoarchitects

Tomoarchitects undertook the renovation and transformation of an old laboratory into a residential loft located in the heart of Milan’s center. The primary objective was to restore the original structure of the house while preserving its visibility and integrity.

Restoration Challenges

The space had been concealed under whiteboard coverings for decades, necessitating an extensive restoration of the bricks and wood ceiling, which had deteriorated over time. Additionally, excavation work was carried out on the ground floor to enhance the structural foundation.

Materials and Design

Employing contemporary and sustainable materials such as concrete, wood, steel, iron, glass, and leather, the architects merged modern elements with the 18th-century structure. The loft spans 300 square meters, with open yet distinct spaces spread across the ground floor and mezzanine level, achieving a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality.

Architectural Features

The original brick arches define the space, offering diagonal visual perspectives that maintain privacy while enabling a seamless flow throughout. The layout strategically separates day and night areas while allowing for interconnectedness through open space filters like the kitchen and studio.

Spatial Connectivity

The loft comprises two levels interconnected by a central core featuring a stainless steel and oak staircase enclosed within a circular concrete structure. This core serves as the hub of circulation, enhancing connectivity between spaces.

High-quality craftsmanship and advanced technology converge to create an attractive and efficient living environment. Meticulous attention to detail ensures rounded edges wherever possible, promoting fluid movement and tactile appeal.
