Reimagining Colonial Architecture: The Perched House by Studio BO

Located in the historic colonial center of Casablanca, the Perched House by Studio BO offers panoramic views of the city’s landmarks, including the grand “sacré coeur” church, the old harbor, and the iconic Hassan II Mosque. Situated near the expansive public park, this penthouse epitomizes urban luxury.

Innovative Design Approach

The rehabilitation of this penthouse presented unique challenges, including low-standing beams and structural obstacles. Studio BO’s solution was to embrace these constraints by curving elements throughout the space, creating a dynamic and immersive environment akin to a spider web. The layout was meticulously designed to optimize functionality and enhance the visual drama of the space. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an antechamber that serves as a central hub, providing access to different areas of the penthouse.

Preserving Colonial Heritage

Respecting the historic colonial architecture was paramount in the renovation process. Studio BO delicately repaired and conserved original features such as the terrazzo flooring and rooftop stairs. Additionally, traditional materials like waxed concrete, travertine stone, and local beldi zellig were incorporated to maintain authenticity while meeting modern needs. Moroccan zellig beldi tiles from Fez adorn the wet rooms, adding a contemporary twist to the traditional glazed terracotta tiles.

Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

The penthouse seamlessly blends traditional Moroccan elements with modern design aesthetics. Metal-framed doors and reinforced glass partitions juxtapose against the rustic charm of terrazzo flooring and handcrafted zellig tiles. This fusion of old and new creates a unique atmosphere that honors the past while embracing the present.

Rooftop Oasis

The rooftop serves as the crown jewel of the penthouse, offering a serene escape reminiscent of an ocean liner deck. Adorned with local cement tiles in English green, the rooftop features a bar, storage space, seating areas, and an outdoor toilet. This independent space provides residents with a tranquil retreat and breathtaking views of the cityscape.

Conclusion

The Perched House by Studio BO is a testament to the firm’s innovative design approach and commitment to preserving architectural heritage. By seamlessly blending traditional elements with contemporary design concepts, Studio BO has created a luxurious urban oasis that celebrates the rich history and vibrant culture of Casablanca.
