The Ring on the Green Apartment, designed by HAMS and, Studio, represents a renovation project of the architect’s own residence. Situated in a high-density residential area, this 90-square-meter space on the second floor of an apartment building was envisioned to serve as a multifunctional base, encompassing living quarters, an office, a studio, and a showroom.
Design Philosophy
The architects approached the renovation plan by carefully analyzing the existing conditions while prioritizing two key aspects: maintaining a bright space with eight openings and preserving the materiality of the aged concrete. The design aimed to maximize air volume and line of sight, resulting in a one-room layout that seamlessly integrates the dining and living areas with the kitchen and atelier, separated by sliding doors. To enhance the presence of the existing concrete structure, steel flat bars were introduced, creating a dynamic contrast between materials and structural elements.
Innovative Features
A central feature of the design is the “Linkaged Ring,” a hardware element suspended from the existing ceiling, traversing the kitchen, dining room, living room, and studio. Comprising two flat bars with integrated lighting fixtures, this element serves as both a functional and aesthetic focal point, offering versatility for various activities within the space.
Green Integration
Addressing the importance of privacy and connection with the neighborhood in Tokyo’s high-density context, the architects devised a “Green Back” concept surrounding the one-room. Utilizing the existing bow window, a green layer of plants was incorporated, partitioned by an inner sash with rounded corners to avoid direct sightlines with neighbors while controlling light and enhancing thermal insulation. This green perimeter creates a comfortable and visually appealing enclosure, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Emphasizing versatility, the design aims to eliminate the traditional residential feel, allowing the space to evolve with the changing needs of the occupants over time. By maximizing existing elements and promoting adaptability, the one-room serves as a dynamic vessel for diverse activities, accommodating both work and private life transitions.
