Introducing Keep Banana Ice Cream Shop by Martino Hutz Architecture

The concept behind Keep Banana Ice Cream Shop was born from the client’s vision of creating a vegan ice cream shop using only bananas that were too ripe for sale but perfect for crafting delicious frozen treats. Situated in the side wing of Sendliner Tor, within a bustling pedestrian area, the challenge lay in attracting passersby despite the shop’s modest storefront.

Design Innovation: Blending Interior with Exterior

To address this challenge, the architects opted to replace the existing entrance door with a striking tree-wing door, symbolizing a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces. This innovative design choice aimed to captivate pedestrians and draw attention to the shop’s unique offering.

Inspired by Architectural Heritage

Drawing inspiration from the existing arched door, the design team incorporated elements of forced perspective reminiscent of Palazzo Spada by Architect Francesco Borromini, constructed in 1635. This optical illusion technique manipulates perception, enhancing the spatial experience for customers.

Harmonizing Design Elements

Central to the design is the cone-shaped vault that extends from the original arched entrance, complemented by two additional arches that frame the space, akin to a sweeping brush stroke. The broom finish texture accentuates these vaults, providing a sense of directionality and cohesion throughout the interior.

Functional Elegance

In terms of layout, the furniture follows a clean, longitudinal arrangement, effectively dividing the space into distinct customer and serving areas. Vertical surfaces feature oak wood finishes, adding warmth and sophistication to the minimalist aesthetic. Furthermore, the movable counter offers flexibility, allowing for direct street vending opportunities.

Conclusion: A Fusion of Aesthetics and Purpose

Keep Banana Ice Cream Shop exemplifies the fusion of innovative design concepts with functional practicality. By reimagining traditional architectural elements and embracing sustainable principles, Martino Hutz Architecture has created a captivating space that not only celebrates the humble banana but also offers a delightful sensory experience for patrons.
