O’Connell Athletic Center: Enhancing Campus Life

The University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut, enlisted JCJ Architecture to transform its existing O’Connell Athletic Center into a versatile multi-sport arena and venue, reflecting the institution’s commitment to health, wellness, and community engagement.

Collaborative Design Approach

This project marks JCJ Architecture’s fourth new building for the campus, showcasing a longstanding partnership with the University. Emphasizing inclusivity, the design aimed to benefit the entire campus community, offering social spaces beyond athletics. Situated adjacent to the Student Center, the facility serves as a vibrant hub of student activity.

Architectural Integration

JCJ Architecture harmonized the traditional red brick colonial aesthetic of the campus with modern design elements. The result blends red brick materiality and yellow doorways with sleek glass forms, clean lines, and expansive windows. The integration of the University’s colors, blue and yellow, further enhances visual appeal and campus cohesion.

Natural Light and Warmth

The entrance features south-facing windows, inviting natural light and warmth into the building. Sunscreens and shading overhangs control glare, while warm wood paneling adds a welcoming touch. Interior finishes, including sports branding and a wooden trophy wall, infuse athletic excitement into the space.

Versatile Spaces

The main lobby serves as a flexible concourse, doubling as a ticketing and concessions area during events and providing comfortable seating for studying and socializing. The design seamlessly connects the lobby to the central gymnasium, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Focus on Wellness

Central to the program is a full NCAA regulation basketball court, complemented by multiple training rooms catering to competitive athletes and the broader student body. The inclusion of student health services on the ground floor underscores the facility’s emphasis on wellness and holistic student support.

Conclusion

The O’Connell Athletic Center stands as a testament to innovative design and collaborative partnership, enriching campus life at the University of Saint Joseph. By seamlessly integrating modern elements with traditional aesthetics and prioritizing inclusivity and wellness, the facility serves as a dynamic focal point for student engagement and athletic excellence.
