A Blend of Tradition and Sustainability
Situated in Santa Comba, Galicia, the O Castro da Costiña Cabins by Gramática Arquitectónica harmonize with the surrounding landscape, merging traditional elements with sustainable design principles. Inspired by permaculture, these cabins reflect a commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.
Embracing the Seasons
Surrounded by eucalyptus monoculture, the plot is enclosed by a small perimeter plant wall, delineating a boundary between static and dynamic landscapes. Beyond the wall, the evergreen eucalyptus dominates, while inside, native deciduous trees, flowers, and orchards celebrate the changing seasons, offering guests a vibrant natural experience.
Circular Design Philosophy
The plot is organized into circles of varying sizes, fostering exploration and learning about cultivation processes. The cabins, designed with static elements at their base, evoke granaries or spacecraft, while elevated modules minimize interference with the terrain and allow for natural runoff. Drawing inspiration from both ancient castros and futuristic ideals, the design seamlessly blends past and present.
Sustainable Living Spaces
Each cabin features two distinct levels: a lower plateau housing living quarters and a small office, and an upper landscaped roof serving as both cover and green space. With sedum-covered roofs attracting pollinating insects, these cabins contribute to local biodiversity while providing comfortable, eco-friendly accommodations.
Aesthetic Integration
The facade’s continuous design, punctuated by large vertical openings, blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. Off-white tones echo traditional Galician architecture, while dark brown carpentry adds contrast and depth. Inside, consistent textures and warm hues create a welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the connection between guests and nature.
In summary, O Castro da Costiña Cabins exemplify a harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and modern design principles, offering guests a unique retreat that celebrates the beauty of Galicia’s natural landscape.
