Instagram's Verification Process with Video Selfies

Meta-owned photo-sharing app Instagram has reportedly initiated a verification process requiring some users to submit video selfies showcasing multiple angles of their face to confirm their identity.

Verification Process

As per reports from XDA Developers, several users have been prompted to provide video selfies for identity verification purposes. Although the feature was initially tested last year, technical difficulties were encountered, delaying its full implementation.

Purpose and Goal

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, aims to utilize this feature to combat the proliferation of fake or spam accounts on the platform. By enhancing identity verification measures, Instagram seeks to enhance user trust and safety.

Submission and Privacy

Upon recording the video selfie, users are required to submit it to the platform for identity confirmation. However, it’s important to note that the submitted video will not be visible to other Instagram users and will be automatically deleted from the servers within 30 days, ensuring user privacy and data protection.

‘Take a Break’ Feature

In addition to the verification process, Instagram is also testing a new feature called ‘Take a Break.’ This feature is designed to encourage users to take regular breaks from prolonged usage of the app.

Expected Availability

According to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, the ‘Take a Break’ feature is anticipated to be more widely available by December. This feature rollout aligns with Instagram’s commitment to promoting user well-being and addressing concerns over excessive screen time.

Context and Criticism

The introduction of these new features comes amidst growing criticism regarding Instagram’s impact on the mental health of its users, particularly teenagers. Recently, American whistleblower Frances Haugen highlighted the potential adverse effects of popular social media platforms on the mental well-being of young individuals.

Instagram’s implementation of identity verification measures and well-being features reflects the platform’s ongoing efforts to prioritize user safety and mental health.
