Instagram's New Quiet Mode

Instagram has introduced three control features, including ‘Quiet Mode,’ designed to help users manage their time and control their Instagram experience. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, stated that these features aim to assist people, particularly teens, in regulating their usage and content consumption on the platform.

Understanding Quiet Mode

Quiet Mode allows users to designate specific times of the day or week when they do not wish to receive notifications. Enabling this mode alters your profile’s activity status and sends an automated reply to anyone who messages you during this period. By reducing distractions, Quiet Mode encourages users to focus on other activities, thereby reducing overall screen time. Upon disabling Quiet Mode, Instagram provides a summary of missed notifications to ensure users stay updated.

How to Enable Quiet Mode

  • Open Instagram and navigate to settings.
  • Select notifications and tap on ‘pause all’ to activate Quiet Mode.
  • A prompt will appear, indicating that while push notifications will be paused, new notifications will still be visible upon opening Instagram.
  • Choose the duration for which you want to pause notifications from the prompted box.

Hidden Words to Recommendation

In addition to existing options to hide words in comments or direct messages, Instagram now extends this feature to recommendations. Users can input words, emojis, or hashtags they wish to avoid, ensuring that content containing those elements is not recommended to them.

Using Hidden Words to Recommendation

  • Open Instagram and access settings.
  • Navigate to privacy settings and select ‘hidden words.’
  • Add words, emojis, or phrases you want to avoid seeing in your feed under ‘custom words for messages and comments.’

Multi-select for Not Interested

Instagram users can now multi-select posts from the explore page and mark them as ‘not interested.’ This feature enables users to hide multiple posts of unwanted content, enhancing their explore page experience.

How to Use Multi-select for Not Interested

  • Open Instagram and tap the search icon.
  • Long-press the post you want to remove and select ‘Not Interested.’
  • A prompt will appear, stating that fewer similar posts will be recommended in the future, with an option to hide more.
  • Click ‘hide more’ to select and hide multiple posts.

Apart from these features, Instagram has updated its parental supervision tools to offer more control to parents, allowing them to monitor their child’s account activity and privacy settings effectively.
