Instagram, the photo-sharing platform owned by Meta, is empowering users with more control over the sensitive content they encounter on the platform. Through an expansion of the Sensitive Content Control feature, users will have the ability to manage the quantity of sensitive content and accounts they encounter across various sections of the app.
Expanded Control Across Platforms
The Sensitive Content Control feature will now extend its coverage to all areas where Instagram makes recommendations. This expansion encompasses not only the Explore tab but also Search, Reels, Accounts You Might Follow, Hashtag Pages, and In-Feed Recommendations.
Instagram explained that it will apply its existing recommendation guidelines technology to ensure consistency across the platform’s recommendations on Search and Hashtag pages. This means users will experience a more uniform approach to content moderation and recommendation enforcement.
Three Control Options
The Sensitive Content Control feature offers users three options, each designed to cater to different preferences regarding exposure to sensitive content. These options have been renamed to provide clearer descriptions of their functions:
- Standard: This option serves as the default state, limiting the visibility of some sensitive content and accounts.
- More: Users who opt for this setting will have increased exposure to sensitive content and accounts, providing a broader range of content.
- Less: Choosing this option reduces the visibility of sensitive content compared to the default state, offering a more filtered experience. However, users under the age of 18 won’t have access to the “More” option.
Additional Tools for Customization
Instagram emphasizes that alongside the Sensitive Content Control feature, users have access to various tools to shape their Instagram experience further. These include Comment Control, Restrict, Block, and Mute functionalities. The platform aims to continue expanding its toolkit over time, ensuring users have the flexibility to tailor their Instagram interactions according to their preferences.
Pinning Posts and Reels
In addition to the enhanced Sensitive Content Control feature, Instagram now enables users to pin up to three posts or reels to the top of their profile. This feature allows users to highlight their favorite or most important content for easy access by visitors to their profile.
To utilize this feature, users can navigate to an individual post, tap on the three dots icon, and select “pin to your profile” to start pinning their preferred content.
The updates and additions introduced by Instagram underscore the platform’s commitment to providing users with a more personalized and curated experience, empowering them to navigate and engage with content in a manner that aligns with their preferences and values.
