Instagram is gearing up to introduce a full screen mode for its feed, aiming to enhance content immersion and discoverability. According to Meta’s spokesperson, Seine Kim, this feature is currently in the testing phase and is available to a limited number of users.
Full Screen Experience
For those fortunate enough to have access to this feature, scrolling through the Instagram feed may soon showcase videos in full-screen mode. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, confirmed this development via a tweet. He also provided a sneak peek of the full-screen feed testing on his Instagram story, emphasizing the significance of photos on Instagram.
Similar to TikTok
The upcoming full-screen feed on Instagram is expected to bear resemblance to TikTok feeds, offering users a familiar browsing experience. While the feature is currently undergoing testing, Instagram assures that it will be rolled out to all users in the near future.
Evolution of Design
Earlier experiments by Instagram revealed full-screen photos and videos with white bars at the top and bottom of the screen, while retaining the main navigation bar. However, the new design appears poised to introduce changes to shortcuts for accessing messages inbox and creating new posts, resembling TikTok’s Clear mode.
Competition with TikTok
This development marks Meta’s first foray into developing a feature to rival TikTok’s interface. It will be intriguing to observe how users, particularly in India, respond to this full-screen mode reminiscent of TikTok. Notably, TikTok was among the apps banned in India in 2020, alongside 118 others.
As Instagram evolves to embrace full-screen feeds, it underscores Meta’s efforts to adapt to changing user preferences and compete with leading platforms in the social media landscape.
