Facebook-owned Instagram has introduced a new feature aimed at assisting creators in monetizing their content – subscriptions. This fresh addition enables Instagram users to subscribe to exclusive content from their preferred creators, including Instagram Live streams and badges, among other perks.
Testing and Expansion
Currently, Instagram is testing this feature with a select group of creators and influencers in the United States. However, the platform has announced plans to expand subscriptions to include more creators in the upcoming weeks.
Subscription Benefits
Subscribers will be required to pay a monthly fee to access exclusive content from their beloved creators. This subscription will grant them privileges such as access to subscriber-only Lives and Stories, alongside a distinctive purple badge signifying their status as subscribers to the content creator.
Pricing Flexibility
Instagram has disclosed that subscription prices will range from $0.99 to $99 per month, with creators having the autonomy to set their prices. Additionally, Instagram has announced that it will not charge any commission to creators, at least until 2023, offering a year-long window for both the company and creators to experiment with this new feature.
Previous Offerings and Market Landscape
While Instagram’s subscription model holds promise for creators and users alike, it is not the first social media platform to delve into paid subscriber-only plans. Competitor Twitter has been offering the Super Follow feature, enabling users to access exclusive content from their preferred creators for a monthly fee ranging from $2.99 to $9.99. Similarly, Facebook has had subscription offerings for some time.
Monetization Options and Alternatives
Subscription services on Instagram represent one of the several avenues available to content creators for monetization. Alternative options include Creator Shops, affiliate e-commerce, and branded content marketplace, among others. Moreover, platforms like YouTube have long provided subscription features, allowing users to become “members” of their favorite channels, unlocking exclusive perks such as loyalty badges and behind-the-scenes access.
Beyond social media platforms, websites like Patreon, Kickstarter, and Ko-Fi offer additional avenues for content creators to monetize their audience, providing a diverse range of options to suit varying preferences and needs.
